ABOUT FLAVOURS OF KOŠICE

When it comes to food and people, Košice has always been a multi-cultural city (at least by Central European standards). Slovak, Hungarian, Czech, Jewish and German flavours have all contributed to the special blend of restaurants the city enjoyed throughout its long history. The first pub and restaurant in Slovakia (and arguably Europe) can still be found up and running here. When it comes to beer, the first mention of local brew comes from the 13th Century. Wine lovers will be happy to discover our rejuvenated wine-making tradition taking shape in the city's many modern wine bars. While a lot of establishments were forced to close down during the communist era, the city has been experiencing a new bloom of traditional establishments as well as innovative restaurant and bar concepts in recent years. Whether you are interested in the typical, hearty Slovak food and strong drinks, the fancy old café scene, the new, up-and-coming bistro and food truck fare, or you would like to ride the local craft beer train, we have something for everyone!

OUR TOURS

Traditional Slovak Food Tour

All foodies would agree that tasting typical local fare of the country you are visiting is just as important for understanding the nation and its people as seeing all the sights. We definitely think so. That's why we would like to invite you on a culinary tour, where you get to taste and enjoy some of the pillars of traditional Slovak cooking (and drinking!). Our knowledgeable local guide, born and bred in Košice, will answer any questions you might have regarding local life and customs. You will get to visit a traditional food market where Slovak grannies sell produce fresh from their gardens, the oldest restaurant in Europe serving fantastic beer brewed on site and taste some of those famous dishes made from Slovak sheep’s cheese (bryndza), a product protected by the EU. We will taste about 10-11 different foods altogether, so make sure you come hungry!

Price: 65 EUR per person

Foodie Tour

The times they are a-changing! Košice is not what it used to be. The days when the most exotic dish you could have at a restaurant was a soggy pizza or a tired kebab are long gone. Today Košice is starting to take its place on the map as THE city in Slovakia to go food-hunting. Exciting new restaurants with inspiring menus are popping up faster than you can say “bundás kenyér“, (Hungarian savoury French toast, a favourite for breakfast in Slovakia). Our foodie tour offers some local classics with a new twist, as well as the latest talk of the town (we will taste about 10-11 different foods altogether). Moreover, your knowledgeable food-loving guide will answer all the questions you might have regarding (Eastern) Slovak life and customs. Wherever you come from, you will not leave disappointed.

Price: 100 EUR per person

Craft Beer Tour

Košice's beer-brewing history dates back to the 13th Century, where we find the first mention of local beer in local historical documents. Much later on, when it comes to the basics, Slovakia has its beer brewing knowledge covered. Thanks to our long-term, albeit former relationship with the Czechs, we learned how to brew fantastic Pilsner-style lager (which you can get at any bar or pub). But just like in the rest of the world, recent years have brought up an exciting trend and new, local micro-breweries, brewing natural, unfiltered beers have started to pop up. You will visit the oldest pub in Košice (and possibly Europe!), learn what is “magic eye”, and how do you say “cheers” correctly. Your beer-loving, Košice-born guide will answer any questions you might have regarding social life and drinking customs. And most importantly, you will get to taste 8-10 local brews, along with some beer snacks to keep your belly happy.

Alternative Košice Pub Crawl

Košice comes most alive on Friday nights, especially in the summer. Walking in the city centre, you might wonder if you happen to be attending some kind of festival. Let's not kid ourselves, we like to drink and we are pretty good at it! On our alternative pub crawl we will show you where the local students and old punks go to get their fix. Do not expect a dress code or perfumed toilets! We will show you the real Košice night life we love and enjoy. You will visit several new hip bars as well as old-time dirty classics. It might not be pretty, but it is sure as hell gonna be fun! Come well fed and get ready to experience the dark side of our town!

Price: 40 EUR per person

FAQ

How do I book the tour?

Simply drop us an email with the type of tour you are interested in, the date that would suit you and the number of persons coming. We will take it from there. There is no booking fee involved.

Can I pay with credit card?

Unfortunately not. All payments will have to be done in cash on the spot, when you meet your tour guide. We advise you to bring some cash with you in case you would like to buy some delicious souvenirs.

How much in advance do I need to book?

Since the amount of foodies we can accommodate at any given time is limited, book the tour as much in advance as possible, at least a few days before your desired tour.

What times do the tours start?

Most tours start in the early afternoon, but we are pretty flexible, so please drop us an email to arrange the details. The Alternative Košice Pub Crawl starts around 20:00 on Friday evenings.

Are the prices final?

Yes, the price includes all food and local drinks. For the Alternative Košice Pub Crawl, entrance fee to the club is not included.

How much will I eat?

We will eat the equivalent of a full large meal, so please come hungry.

Is the tour suitable for people with special diet requirements?

We can accommodate the needs of vegetarians if you let us know in advance. Unfortunately, since Slovak cooking is heavily based on dairy, the tour will not be able to pay special attention to other dietary requirements. When it comes to drink, the tours will include some beer or local non-alcoholic drinks.

Is the tour suitable for children?

As long as your children would find it fun they are more than welcome. Children will however have to pay the full price if they want to participate in the tasting. The Craft Beer Tour and Alternative Košice Pub Crawl is suitable for persons over 18 only.

What if the weather is bad?

The weather would have to be really bad for the tour not to be happening and we would always let you know in advance. In case of light to moderate rain please bring an umbrella, waterproof shoes and some warmer clothes. We will spend the majority of the time indoors, seated.

What if I need to cancel?

We understand that sometimes plans change. In case you need to cancel, please let us know as much in advance as possible.

How much walking is involved?

The city centre is relatively small and we will try to keep the walking distances between stops as short as possible.

What is the size of the group?

We try to keep the groups small, so please try to book as early as possible to secure a spot. Maximum amount of people per group will not be more than 8. If you are a bigger group, please email us.

What languages do you speak?

We speak Slovak, English and Swedish fluently. Our Spanish and German is a bit rusty, but can be used in case of emergency!
